Hard-Core Blueberry Smoothie

I don’t drink sports drinks or much of anything besides water. However, I do occasionally enjoy a nice refreshing smoothie from time to time.hardcoreblueberrysmoothie One of my favorite drinks is my Hard-Core Blueberry Smoothie. I call it “hard-core” because I usually drink it either prior to my strength-training sessions or between strength-training and cardio. I also call it hard-core because, as you’ll see below, one of the ingredients is a pineapple core (Aren’t I so clever?). ;-)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup Blueberries (organic)
  • 1 cup Dandelion Greens (organic)
  • 1 cup Ice (approx. 6 ice cubes)
  • ½ cup Water
  • 2 thin slices Ginger (approx. 2 grams)
  • 1 Pineapple core (optional, if you’re sensitive to citrus)

Preparation:

  1. Place all of your ingredients in your blender (I use a Vitamix) and secure the lid.
  2. Select variable 1.
  3. Turn on the blender and quickly increase speed to 10.
  4. Blend on high for about 30 to 45 seconds, or until you’ve reached your desired consistency.

(Yields 2 cups or 500 ml)

This is such a refreshing and energizing drink! It is the perfect natural sports drink and even supports your digestive health.

Pineapple, especially the core is high in bromelain, a powerful anti-inflammatory enzyme which is used to treat bowel issues. Bromelain also helps to treat and prevent inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis. It also speeds up recovery from sports injuries, so it is a perfect post-workout beverage.

Ginger is full of anti-inflammatory oils which help alleviate pain from arthritis. Ginger also helps heal and protect the gut. The blueberries and dandelion greens are both high in antioxidants which combat cancer, boost immunity, and support a healthy gastrointestinal system.

Flavor-wise, the blueberries and dandelions combine for a very faint “minty” flavor and the pineapple adds some sweetness, while the ginger really wakes up your taste buds and gets you wide awake and ready to go!

Try it out after your next workout and let me know what you think!

Feedback & Comments:

  1. I will have to try this! It just so happens I have a huge container of organic blueberries and just received dandelion greens in my CSA box (they’re not my favorite but I know they’re good for you) and I have a pineapple just waiting to get cut up sitting on the counter. I have to admit it sounds like an odd combination but I love trying new things! :)

Awesome! It sounds like you are meant to try this out. It is a bit of an odd combination, but I really like it! Sometimes I use strawberries in with the blueberries, too.
