Are You Maximizing Your “Superhuman” ADHD Strengths?

Most often we focus on the negative aspects of ADHD characteristics.  I am not going to lie, ADHD traits can cause many problems sometimes,PowerPosePost729 but they can also be great strengths. In fact, I’d say they are nearly superhuman strengths.

According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “superhuman” can be defined as, “exceeding normal human power, size, or capability.”

“Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap a tall building in a single bound”–only someone with ADHD has that kind of energy.

Have you ever stopped to consider just how closely ADHD characteristics resemble Superman’s traits? No. I didn’t think so.  Allow me to illuminate them for you.

Here are a few of Superman’s traits that many people with ADHD also possess:

1). Superhuman Strength and Stamina

Hyperactivity anyone?  High energy actually is a positive trait. A person with ADHD can get so much done if they can focus on the task at hand (see hyperfocus) and use their powers for good.  I know many peeps with ADHD who can work circles around neuro-typical folks.

2). Superhuman Speed

Did someone say impulsivity?  People with ADHD tend to be quick thinkers and jump into action without haste. Many neuro-typical people really struggle with making decisions and, regretfully, never take action because they can’t get past second guessing themselves. As long as you check in with yourself and make sure that your decisions and actions are in alignment with your goals, values, and priorities, quick thinking and action-taking is a great asset.

3). Vision Powers

Superman has x-ray vision and can burn a hole through things with his eyes.  Sure, we can microfocus and macrofocus, but what is more powerful than hyperfocus? Hyperfocus is a common ability for folks with ADHD. If you have ADHD, then you know that when hyperfocus kicks in, nothing, and I mean nothing, can break your concentration.

4). Super Senses

In addition to his vision powers, Superman has highly-enhanced senses of hearing, touch, and smell.  Many people with ADHD are hypersensitive in these areas, as well.  They notice things that other people do not. While this may be a hindrance when you are trying to pay attention to a conversation in a noisy, cold, aroma-filled restaurant, it is bliss when you’re eating your favorite dish, wearing you comfiest PJ’s, running outside with a cool breeze on your face, or taking in every single detail when you hold your baby for the first time.

5). Kryptonite Vulnerability

Superman loses his powers when he’s exposed to Kryptonite.  People with ADHD shut down when they’re exposed to boring or tedious things.  The key is to focus on your interests for optimal performance and for your overall happiness, in general.  When that’s not possible, bring in tools and support to help you function until the “kryptonite” wears off.

As Clark Kent, Superman spent much of his time trying to hide his super powers and fit in with the “regular” people.  It’s not all that different for people with ADHD trying to fit in and manage every-day life.  While its is definitely necessary to manage your ADHD traits and minimize your weaknesses, don’t forget to also cultivate and maximize your strengths. You must let them shine, as well.  That’s what superman does when he proudly bears the “S” on his chest, reaches towards the sky, and takes flight. Just because ADHD has presented you with challenges, it doesn’t mean that you can’t learn to soar.
